Royal Jester Games
Royal Jester Games is a small entertainment business based in the West Midlands, UK. They provide video games and consoles and run gaming tournaments. They are available for private hire, and are also available for hire at venues like pubs, cafes and college campuses.

The Brief
I took a call with Ben from Royal Jester Games to discuss the challenges his brand faced and where he plans to take his business in the future. His main challenges were having a consistent brand and being recognised across various channels.
His target audience is split across various groups, nostalgic retro gamers, competitive gamers, and parents who would hire their services for parties. He also has to cater for venues who are looking for a professional service to hire.
The solution? To create a brand that feels fun and nostalgic, but also maintains a professional image.

Brand Mascot
Royal Jester Games were also looking for a proposed design for a new mascot to go alongside a logo. I took a look at the target audience and began my research. I devised a mascot that feels like an 80s or 90s video game icon would be a perfect fit to create a nostalgic feeling with his older audience but feel exciting or cute enough for the new young audience.
My research led to an anthropomorphic furry character made up of a simplified colour palette. The character was created to have a cell shaded appearance to fit in with its time period, but also to be easily scalable.

The Crown and the Collar
The idea for the logo came directly from the brand name with the idea that the royal, and the jester, are two sides of the same coin. I took two objects that quickly identified the two sides, a crown to symbolise royalty, and a collar with bells that would commonly be worn by jesters.
This idea ties together all of the visual assets, with the crown and collar visible on each asset. The mascot wears both of them and the locations allow the mascot to be used as a head and shoulder shot without losing either element.

The logomark was designed to be compatible with various physical mediums. It appears as a circle split in half to reveal both halves of Royal Jester. It's shape allows it to be printed on stickers, created into coins or tokens, and even medals to be given away at tournaments.
The wordmark features the crown on the word royal, and the R in jester features a flick with a bell integrating both sides. Tweaks were made to the font to increase its visual interest such as R curving to meet the O, or the letters E, S, T and L having matching slants.

Social Post Template
Creatable in Canva
Royal Jester Games create their marketing images in Canva. I created a template to recreate this social post without needing complicated software or skills. It comes with swappable mascot and logomark, and a text positioning frame.
Colour Palette
Ben was looking for a colour palette that was inspired by warmth. The palette I designed gives the feeling of warmth but also feels energetic exciting the viewer. The simplicity of the palette was inspired by old gaming mascots that often used slight tweaks of primary and secondary colours.
The primary colour tangerine leads the charge making up the majority brand material, with other fun flavours lemonade and plum adding to the visual. The bold scarlet inspires feelings of passion which is present in everything Royal Jester Games do.

Brand Pattern
I created a brand pattern that takes inspiration from the mascot. The shape used is based on the mascots footprint, but also bares resemblance to the shape of the crown they wear.
The style of this pattern works great at any size, and the social media post above shows this perfectly. It shows a bold shape when zoomed in, but provides a subtle texture to the background. It also works great for framing content such as the business card pictured further below.

Other Assets
I created a variety of other assets for Royal Jester Games such as a business card, sticker designs, t-shirts and also display banners for both his community, and for his hired events.
